In Paraguay, Holy Week is celebrated in full swing beginning on Holy Wednesday. On this day, large quantities of bagel-like bread pieces called “chipas” are cooked in traditional brick ovens and eaten while hot and fresh.

Throughout Holy Week, chipas will be consumed, getting a bit harder each day. By Good Friday, dipping your chipa in a cup of coffee or tea is a good idea since they are too hard to chew otherwise by that time.

Good Friday is a quiet, relaxing day on which many will fast, at least from red meat. Easter Sunday itself is a day to spend with family at home, enjoying a festive meal with “asado” beef ribs or pork as the centerpiece. Many also attend soccer or volleyball matches.
